Thac Ba Lake is considered an area of ecological and cultural importance. The region is home to a number of ethnic minority groups, most notably the Dao but also Tay, Nung, Thai, Muong, Giay and others, with many living along the banks of the lake and earning a living from its waters. The lake was created when the Thac Ba Hydropower Plant was constructed on the Chay River in Yen Binh district. It is immense: more than 23,000 hectares, 80 kilometres long, up to 10 kilometres wide and 42 metres down at its deepest point. The landscape is stunning, with 1,331 islands, mostly covered in forest, and still, clear water.

Day 1:

Sapa  – Lao Cai – Bac Ha – Xin Man (220 km – Approximate: 7 hours drive)

Day 2:

Xin Man -Bac Quang – Luc Yen – Thac Ba (210 km – Approximate: 6 hours drive)

Day 3:

Thac Ba  – Hanoi (180 km; Approximate: 7 hours drive)

Day 1: Sapa - Bac Ha - Xin Man (220 km)

We’ll set off on the Love road to Xin Man. “Love road” simply because it doesn’t just lead us through a barrage of beautiful rice terrace, old forests, and springs, but also across countless market fairs, cultural signatures of the Northern mountain minorities: Bac Ha fair, Can Cau fair, Nhung Khau Nhin fair, and Cao Son fair. Held for only one day every week, these aren’t just market fairs for buyers and peddlers, but also romantic rendezvous for local lovers. This stretch of road along the daily life of the local ethnic is one of the highlights of our trip. For the night, you can take your pick between a hotel for quiet relaxation or a homestay for more memorable time with the friendly people here.

Day 2: Xin Man- Luc Yen - Thac Ba (210 km)

We can sneak in quite a bit of off-road riding for you today, but it’s strictly for the experienced. Anyway, after a Vietnamese style breakfast, we’ll say goodbye to the friendly and lovely People in Xin Man we’ll tackle old winding track through the old forest that’ll surely give you a challenge. We can drop by a small waterfall in the forest to shake off the summer heat before taking our day’s . we’ll set off on your prefered route to Thac Ba lake. We’ll end the day with a Dao family in a small village. Homestay with Dao family.

Day 3: Thac Ba - Hanoi (180 km)

Last day of the tour, we can be a tourist and take the highways back, or we can bounce off to smaller, quiet roads, and take a brief off-road ride through a green tea plantation. The last 15 km will be the most challenging part of today’s ride as we join in the maddening Hanoi traffic and its cacophony of honking and yelling. Hopefully, we’ll make it back to the hotel with our eardrums intact, safely ending of an adventure!
