Bac Ha Market is nestled in the mountains of northern Vietnam and is one of the most colorful and unique ethnic markets in Southeast Asia. Every Sunday, ethnic minorities from surrounding mountain villages walk, motorbike, ride a horse or water buffalo to socialize, eat, drink, smoke, trade to buy and trade local products.
On Sunday’s Bac Ha Market becomes a blur of ethnic minorities including Flower Hmong (Red Hmong), Black Dao, Tay, Nung, La Chi, Phu La and other minority groups. Historically, the market centered on the horse trade but today it’s common see buffalo, cows, goats, fish and other livestock being sold and bartered.

Sunday Morning: We recommend an early start
The market opens around 7:30am and finishes mid-afternoon, so your guide meets you at 7:00am at your hotel reception to review the itinerary and inspect the motorbikes. Then you depart Sapa towards Lao Cai and Bac Ha passing through several ethnic minority villages. The most common ethnic communities are the Flower H’mong minority people. Experience their daily way of life and traditional dress is a truly unique experience. Bac Ha is the most popular and busiest market in the northern province and in addition to livestock, corn wine, vegetables and household goods are also bought and traded. The morning ends with lunch in Bac Ha eating local delicacies.
After lunch, we drive to Ban Pho village, the most famous village in Bac Ha. Here your guide will explain Flower H’mong minority daily life and you will learn how traditional corn wine is distilled and tour local plum gardens. In the spring Bac Ha Valley is covered with thousands of white plum blossoms giving it the name White Plateau. The tour ends back to Lao Cai or Sapa in late afternoon depending on your schedule.
